Registry Explorer

What Registry Explorer does

Using this tool

Registry Explorer supports Registry analysis. In this guide, you will use it to open copied hives, map user or system context, and interpret one relevant key. Follow the steps below and keep the output with your notes.

Tool guide at a glance

Investigation task

Open copied hives, map user or system context, and interpret one relevant key.

Starting material

Copied Windows Registry hives with their available transaction logs and profile context.

What to record

A key or value finding linked to its hive, user or system context, parser, and limitations.

Evidence and safety

Never edit source hives. Keep user SID, control set, and transaction log context attached. Record the input identifier, tool version, relevant commands or settings, time and time zone, output location, and any errors or limitations as you work.

How the labs complement this guide

The Interactive Lab uses example records to practise investigation decisions. It does not run the installed tool or establish how that version behaves. The Full Lab uses your own training environment and evidence. Obtain or create the required input before starting; a case name in an exercise is not a download.

Accessing Registry Explorer in SUSA

Registry Explorer is part of EZ Tools, used to view and analyse Windows Registry hives offline.

Work from copied hives and retain their associated transaction logs when available. Note which hive, control set, user profile and time zone you are examining, and corroborate Registry values with file system and event evidence rather than interpreting a key in isolation.

The tool is available in C:\Tools\Zimmerman Tools\net9\RegistryExplorer.
